Why Commercial Vehicles Are Criminal Targets

Cargo crime is not a new problem. However, it’s a concerning one nonetheless, given that in Europe alone, the estimated cost to businesses is 8.5 billion Euros a year. That’s according to the European Union, who are seeking to cut the number of criminal attacks on road transport vehicles each year. But just why are lorries, vans and trailers such a common criminal target?

Well, primarily it’s a matter of value. Lorries, trucks, vans and trailers are often used to transport a large amount of high value goods. This makes them an attractive criminal target. Whether it’s a van full of clothing or a trailer full of electrical, criminals getting their hands on that cargo will make more financial gain (albeit illegally) than from targeting a family vehicle.

Add to that the relative ease with which road vehicles can be targeted. Lorries and vans using Europe’s motorways are not always particularly difficult targets. Drivers stop periodically along their journeys and it’s not difficult for organised criminals to obtain information about stopping locations. There’s even times a driver must sleep in his lorry during a journey.

Many believe that cargo crime is committed largely by organised criminal gangs. These gangs know the road routes well, they know the service stations and know how to identify a potentially ‘good target.’ This makes cargo crime difficult to fight.

Manufacturers and freight companies all want to fight cargo crime, but it won’t be easy. However it’s recommended that vehicles are fitted with high end slam locks or another advanced commercial vehicle locking system designed for your specific type of vehicle. In addition, drivers should always be briefed about the risks and of potentially the safest stopping places on their routes.
